Engaging Jewish Youth beyond Bar and Bat Mitzvah
by Sharon Ravitch, Ph.D.
In this study of approximately 800 youth from the Greater Philadelphia Area, ACAJE's goal was to learn about young Jews' interests, needs, and opinions vis-a-vis synagogue school education through engaging them in an action research study. This study focused on youths' reflections on their synagogue school experiences before, during, and after their Bar/Bat Mitzvah toward the goal of stemming the tide of post B'nai Mitzvah drop out through learning creative ways to engage and retain youth in both the formal and informal realms of Jewish life. The study makes recommendations for future study and practice in this area.
