Excerpts from the School Committee Manual
Selection of School Committee Members
School Committee Members Should Be:
- Individuals with an earnest interest in Jewish education and the development of Jewish learning in the school.
- Representative of the larger synagogue community (for example, there should be representatives of various interest groups such as the PTA, Sisterhood, Men’s Club, Adult Education, teacher(s), Executive Board, etc.). This is so that the Committee’s work can reflect the needs of the entire synagogue community and so that these representatives can act as spokespeople for their constituencies and liaisons from the School Committee to the particular committees.
- Individuals who are aware of and willing to commit their time to the Committee’s work both during and between meetings.
- Individuals who show an ability to collaborate with others and to act as team players.
- Individuals who show the ability to listen and take others’ perspectives and who are not preoccupied with their own agendas.
- Individuals who show leadership potential and an ability to communicate positively as well as directly (for example, who can effectively act as a liaison between synagogue groups, members, parents).
